DEMONS: PART TWO

A CODE NAME: WILD HUNT STORY

“Nothing is as real as a dream.

The world can change around you, but your dream will not.

Responsibilities need not erase it. Duties need not obscure it.

Because the dream is within you, no one can take it away.”

Tom Clancy

Margolin awoke with a terrible headache. The constant drone of something loud and monotonous exacerbated the pain in his skull. Through the alcohol fog, his brain began to process the noise. It was engines. Not like the usual engines you hear in a car or truck. This was deeper and steadier. Then there was the fact that he was cold.

“Good morning, sunshine,” said Valkyrie, grinning and handing him a thermos cup of coffee. “We were beginning to think you were gonna sleep all the way there.”

“Where the fuck am I?” he muttered, taking the coffee.

Valkyrie handed him some small red pills, and he popped them into his mouth, swallowing them dry. He’d swallowed enough of them to know they were ibuprofen. There were five, so it was about a thousand milligrams. She next handed him a large bottle of red Gatorade with the lid already off. He drained it in one long chug, then returned the empty bottle.

“Now, you’ve got some IBU’s and electrolytes on board,” she said with a wink. “Once you get that caffeine in your system, you should start to perk up.”

“Thanks,” he croaked, “but you didn’t answer my question.”

“Well, we’re on an airplane,” she said with a wink. “At the moment, we’re somewhere over the great plains: Nebraska, Kansas, or something like that. I’m not sure which. They all look pretty much the same from ten thousand feet.”

“We’re just hitting Eastern Colorado,” corrected a voice from one of the bundles of blankets. “We should be over the Rockies in a few minutes.”

Margolin looked around the spacious cabin and saw six other people huddled beneath their woobies and sipping coffee.

“I don’t recognize this type of plane,” said Margolin. “It’s not a military aircraft I’ve been on before.”

“That’s because it’s not military,” she said, grinning. “It’s a Dornier G92.”

“Isn’t that a skydiving plane?” asked Margolin.

“You sure know your aircraft,” she replied. “Yeah, it’s a skydiving aircraft. That’s the cover story I concocted for Major Clark. That a bunch of us were heading to Arizona to get some chute time. I haven’t jumped since I’ve been with the teams. The one mission where we deployed by parachute was to Argentina, and I was already on the ground.”

“What did the major say?” asked Margolin.

“Honestly, I think he wanted to come with us,” she replied. “He seemed a little jealous and said he wished he was going with us instead of doing all the fit/reps[9] , but they’ve gotta be done by this weekend.”

“Well, at least you didn’t have to come up with an excuse why we couldn’t bring him,” said Margolin. “We don’t want the chain of command to know what we’re really up to.”

“Do you think Clark wouldn’t have come with us?” said Valkyrie.
